Dazibao

Creation of posters and a support  for their publication in a public space

Project carried out in 2019 with Alexine and Léo

The word Dazibao has its origin in China. Literally meaning a “newspaper with large print”, it designates a political or moral poster written by a simple citizen and posted in a public space. Less specifically, this term refers to unofficial activist publications.

For this project, we have explored the usefulness of this medium for displaying non-digitally engaged messages in public spaces.

The posters

Our publications deal with the faults of GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft). Taking particular inspiration from the militant graphics of May 68, we produced 16 posters. On the front, they show an expressive illustration, often accompanied by a simple and memorable slogan. On the back, they give more detail on the denunciation.

Their support

These are displayed on a structure intended to occupy a public space subject to calm weather conditions. Therefore, this support must be autonomous and removable: we must be able to mount it then dismantle it and move it from one place to another.

To achieve this, we had wood cleats and adhesive tape.

After exploring different ideas and making some models, we agreed on a structure inspired by a tree. This composition makes it possible to obtain a balanced support. We can turn around its center and observe the various posters there.
